Fliteboard Buyer Guide

By hdavidson posted on July 25, 2024

This Fliteboard buyers guide will help you find the right board, eFoil unit, propulsion system, wing set, batteries, and more.

Why Fliteboard?

When researching what eFoil to use for our school and retail store, we found many good options, but Fliteboard stood out. Some huge benefits that caught our eye were the 2-year warranty and 24/7 support. They are the world’s most awarded eFoil and offer the most extensive range of boards, masts, batteries, wings, and more. Their Flite APP was really interesting to us as you can share your riders and see where others are eFoiling with an interactive map.

For our school, their Flitecell and Flite Jet Propulsion system made them the safest eFoil. The craftsmanship, material choices, and thoughtful designs were also very appealing. Lastly, the speed and range met our needs. You can ride for two and a half hours or 25 miles and go 30 miles per hour.

Which Fliteboard should I buy?

Flitescooter

237 L, 7′ x 35″

Who this is for: It’s best for beginners or people who prefer a less challenging experience. The Flitescooter is designed to make foiling as easy as possible, functioning like a scooter. With a generous volume of 237 liters, it’s the largest board in the range, making it ideal for family use or long-distance excursions. The Flitescooter has the most extensive wing set and the Flite Jet propulsion system, allowing you to start riding in a few minutes with minimal falls. The handlebars provide additional control, directing the board and foil away when you fall.

Pros: Safe, can be learned in minutes.

Cons: Large board, less exciting than smaller, more advanced models.

Fliteboard AIR

110 L 5’8’’ x 27.5’’

Who this is for: The Fliteboard AIR and AIR PRO are perfect for riders on a budget or families looking for a low-maintenance board. These boards can be easily transported in the back of a truck or even accidentally dropped on the dock without worry, thanks to their rigid foam core and durable yet soft inflatable outer layer. The inflatable deck ensures the safety of your house, car, and boat during transportation and provides a soft landing surface in case of falls.

Pros: Affordable, durable, low-stress, buoyant.

Cons: Inflatable boards do have some drag before taking flight.

What eFoil construction is Best?

Flite AIR PRO

80L 5’ 2’’ x 25.5’’

Consider the AIR PRO if you want all the benefits of the AIR on a smaller board.

Fliteboard

100L 5’8’’ x 28’’

Who this is for: The Fliteboard is designed for riders who want a large, easy-to-use board with a slight learning curve. Most riders find themselves up and riding within 20 minutes. The Fliteboard comes in three different constructions, each offering a unique riding experience.

The carbon boards are stiff, responsive, and durable, while the fiberglass boards are the industry standard. The soft-top construction, a fiberglass board with an EVA foam top layer, offers added durability, grip, and comfort while riding. You get many benefits of the Flite AIR without any drag. This is our choice model for families sharing an eFoil. Choose the Soft-Top construction for added peace of mind, or go all out with Carbon to showcase some style.

What eFoil construction is Best?

Pros: Fun, easy to learn, medium size board with moderate swing weight.

Cons: Riders who want a challenge will outgrow this model in a month or two.

Fliteboard PRO

80L 5’ 2’’ x 25.5’’

Who’s this for: The Fliteboard PRO is our favorite model. If you are looking for a real thrill and up for a small learning curve, we highly recommend the PRO. This smaller 80-liter board will add an hour or two to your learning time; lessons are also a good idea. The benefit is that you don’t have to buy a beginner board first and upgrade later.

Pros: An exciting challenge that will keep you engaged for years. Most riders will never outgrow this model. Those that do could look to the Ultra L2 for wave utopia.

Cons: It’s not the easiest model. It’s not ideal for families to share.

Ultra L2

49L 4’4’’ x 21’’

Who’s this for: This model is the ultimate performance eFoil. Best for intermediate to advanced riders who won’t compromise. If you’re a prone foiler looking for an eFoil that delivers the stoke of a regular surf foil, the Ultra L2 is your answer. With its hydrodynamic design, fast take-offs, and precise turns, this board is a wave shredder. The low swing weight and perfect outline make it ideal for pumping, gliding, wake surfing, and any other challenge you throw at it. The balanced weight of the battery over the mast ensures a ride that will make you question if you’re on a prone foil or an eFoil.

Pros: Small, agile, and advanced. This eFoil feels like you’re surfing or pumping a regular foil board

Cons: This board is advanced and will require time or lessons to master.

What Fliteboard propulsion system should I buy?

When choosing the right propulsion system for your eFoil, you have two options: the Flite Jet and the traditional propeller. The Flite Jet, developed by Fliteboard, uses a jet propulsion system and is the pinnacle of safety. On the other hand, the Flite Propeller is widely used due to its efficiency, speed, and versatility.

What Fliteboard Mast and eFoil Unit should I choose?

There are four masts to choose from. Each has its benefits; some are compatible with the Fliteboard wing range, and others with the upgraded conical wings.

75cm Mast: This mast is best for riders on a budget. Short masts are the easiest to learn with. This unit pairs with the standard wing sets. It is best paired with the Flite AIR, the AIR PRO.

The 80cm Mast: is another budget-friendly option, but with more performance due to its longer length. This means faster, more aggressive riding. It pairs with the standard wings sets and is a great option for the Fliteboard AIR, AIR PRO, Fliteboard, and Fliteboard PRO, the latter being a more advanced model for riders seeking a greater challenge.

Performance 80cm Mast: This upgraded mast allows you to use the conical wings. Think less drag, more speed, more fun. This unit is our choice model for the Fliteboard and Fliteboard PRO.

MN Carbon 82 cm: Best paired with the Ultra L2 or Fliteboard PRO, this is the upper echelon in performance. You can swap between the prop or the Mn Jet Propulsion systems and use the low-drag conical wings.

MN Carbon Wave 82: This unit is best paired with the Ultra L2. This is it if you want the closest mast to a non-electric hydrofoil. The wave is the most streamlined low-drag eFoil unit in existence. If you dream of dropping in on waves, poaching wake, and carving soulful unpowered turns, this should be your mast and eFoil system.

How to choose a Fliteboard wing set.

Rider level, performance, and budget are the three primary considerations. There is a variety of sizes and models to choose from. We’ll start with the size and model.

Choosing a wing size.

Large wings: Wings in the 1500 to 1800 range are stable, slow, and great for learning.

Medium-sized wings: Wings in the 1100 to 1300 range are our recommended size for 90 percent of riders. They’re the sweet spot for fun but have a slight learning curve. It’s okay to start at 1100, but feel free to choose a larger wing if you want an easy ride.

Small wings: Wings in the 900 range and under are best for advanced riders, small riders, and eFoilers who know what they want. It’s best to call us to chat about your specific needs and goals.

Choosing a wing model.

You’ll see there are different variations of each wing model. A “C” indicates the wing is conical and paired with a performance eFoil unit.

Cruiser Wings

The cruiser series is the bread and butter of Fliteboard. We recommend most riders start here. If you’re interested in advanced riding or upgrading wings, call us to chat about your needs and goals so we can make a custom recommendation. The Cruiser 1100 is our top pick. It’s not the easiest wing, but you can learn on it, and you’ll likely never outgrow it.

Flow Wings

These higher-aspect wings are best for gliding, pumping, or riding waves and wake. Expect great pumping and soulful wide arching turns. The Flow S wings can go slower, while the Flow C wings are more hydrodynamic with less drag.  You’ll need the performance 80 or Mn series eFoil units to access the conical wing sets.

Wave Series Wings

These are dedicated wave wings. They are designed for steeper waves and serious surf enthusiasts. The 1100 is an amazing all-arounder for surfing smaller to medium waves.

Flyer Wings

These wings are made for speed. They are best for intermediate to advanced riders. The Flyer 800 is not a beginner wing, and we don’t recommend starting here. Consider this an add-on wing for later use.

Race Wings

The smallest, fastest, and most advanced wings. These are reserved for adrenaline junkies and riders interested in competition race eFoiling.

What eFoil battery should I choose?

Consider how long you intend to ride each session to determine the right battery.
