What’s the easiest eFoil to learn on?

By hdavidson posted on May 10, 2024

What is the easiest eFoil to learn? This is a question we had to ask when starting our eFoil school in Santa Rosa Beach Florida. After some research, we decided Fliteboard is the best for all our services. There are a lot of great eFoils out there right now and they all have their niche. We choose Fliteboard because of the superior quality and diverse range of boards available.

They have inflatable eFoil boards for beginners, eFoil scooters, fiberglass eFoil boards, carbon eFoil boards, soft top EVA foam boards, and models for advanced riders like the Fliteboard PRO or the ULTRA L2. If you want to get into eFoil surfing, racing, or freestyle, there is a Fliteboard for you. If you’re a rank beginner, there is also a perfect board for you. In this blog, we’ll share what we think is the easiest eFoil for beginners and why you should consider using an eFoil with handlebars.

What to look for in an easy-to-learn eFoil?

Safety, buoyancy, balance, and low flight speed are the key factors. A large stable electric hydrofoil wing is going to be important when learning to take flight. We recommend using a high-volume eFoil board with at least 100 liters. The materials are important as well. The Fliteboard AIR is an inflatable eFoil with a rigid section in the middle to connect to the foil. You can also use the Fliteboard in a soft top construction with EVA foam. An eFoil board like this will be softer if you fall on the board while learning. Soft top decks also provide more grip to aid in the learning process.

The propulsion system you choose matters. A propellor is going to provide lots of power, and that is especially helpful for heavy riders when learning. The safest and easiest eFoil propulsion system is the Flite Jet. You never have to worry about kicking the prop when climbing back onto the board. We love it because the power delivery is smooth, forgiving, and easy to control for our eFoil students.

Why Flitescooter is the easiest eFoil.

When you are learning, certain types of eFoils will speed up the process. The Flitescooter is a perfect example of what you would be looking for. It makes eFoiling approachable and accessible for everyone. We find that most people can ride in just minutes.

When learning to eFoil, there are several stages to the process. Usually, you start on your knees or lie down on the board to get used to the power. Then you spend much of the lesson learning to stand on the board and how to steer with your heels and toes. This is called the taxi stage in hydrofoiling. It’s where a rider is moving the board but not yet on foil.

The Flitescooter allows students to skip ahead in the process directly to the taxi stage. The handlebars provide four points of contact with additional control and balance. You can stand in a forward stance, much like riding a bike. The board is inflatable with a carbon core so it will be lightweight and buoyant. This is a huge benefit for beginners! Being able to stand on the board without moving is going to build confidence and save you a lot of falls and energy. There are other eFoils with handlebars, but they are much heavier to carry. The Flitescooter only weighs 66 pounds!

The inflatable board will inspire confidence when you do fall, and the handlebars allow you to turn the foil away from you. There is a wireless safety key, so the Flitescooter will cut the power when it senses the rider is not on the eFoil board. The best part is the handlebars can be removed and the remote can be used in the hand. When you are ready to advance, you can ride it in a surf stance and carve like a regular eFoil.

How to use a Flitescooter eFoil.

Find an area, with flat smooth water that is at least 4 feet deep. Stay at least 300 feet away from swimmers and other solid objects on the water. Carry the board using one handle and the mast to the water. You can remove the Flitecell eFoil battery first to reduce the weight if necessary.

Pair your Flite Controller and wear your wireless safety key. When you enter the water, flip the board upside-down and push it out to the proper depth. Now roll the board back into the upright position and climb on from the side. Watch your feet when climbing on, it’s never fun to kick a hydrofoil under the water. Now you can clip the handlebars on and prepare for takeoff.

Stand up with both hands on the handlebars and keep your feet shoulder-width apart. Activate your wireless safety key by pressing it. Now look at the Flite Controller to confirm the key is active. You will see there are a few different gears you can select on the controller. Start with first gear if you are a lighter rider. You can experiment with a higher gear if you are heavier. You will have the ability to reduce the gear when you are on foil.

How to foil on a Flitescooter

To start, arm the system by pressing the thumb throttle in and then release it completely. Now press and release the minus button on the Flite Controller. Use the thumb throttle and lean forward on the handlebars. The board will start to pick up speed so keep your weight forward as you get comfortable with the movement.

To rise onto the foil, lean back against the handlebars until the hydrofoil takes flight. Once you rise, lean slightly forward into the handlebars to level out. You will need to go about 12.5 miles per hour to achieve flight with the foil. If you are a heavier rider, you may need to go a little faster. It’s best to keep your weight forward at first and travel with the board on the water until you are comfortable. When you feel good, you can shift your weight back to engage the hydrofoil wings. Ride low and touch down as often as you need to build confidence. Aim for longer and longer rides on the foil.

If you sense that you are going to fall, use the handlebars to turn the foil away from you. They will help keep the board and the hydrofoil wings away from you. If you want to stop, you can lower the speed until you touch down. To steer the Flitescooter, you can shift your weight from one foot to the other. Experiment and try for wider and tighter turns!
