Why You Should Test eFoil Wings

Testing wings is the best way to decide on the next wing for you or your family. Not only can you make an informed decision, but you’ll also have an epic weekend of learning and growing as an eFoiler. Testing will make you a better and more discerning rider, and it’s a great way to bond with the family or make new friends. Hydrofoilers are notoriously techy and love to talk about the feel and performance of different foils. Armed with some fundamental knowledge and time on the water, you can be a wing connoisseur in no time.

What to look for: Every eFoil wing offers a different experience. Testing wings before committing allows you to evaluate key aspects like turning radius, glide, stability, maneuverability, speed, range, and overall feel. Some wings are more forgiving, ideal for beginners or those who want a more relaxed ride, while others are built for performance. Think high-aspect wings for endless gliding or medium aspect for a fast, playful rolling turn.

Be Daring: If you have your core wing, this is about fun and exploration. Be daring; try something smaller or from a different range. You’re looking for a wing that will keep eFoiling exciting. Having goals and making progress towards them is a fundamental aspect of all sports, and eFoiling is no different.

Start with the end in mind: If you have a vision for your riding, consider the wings you need to get there. Do you envision yourself riding faster, soul-carving, or maxing out the sharp turns of the smallest race wing possible? Or do you see wake surfing is the pinnacle of the sport?

Consider wings optimized for glide and aimed at the wake size you want to ride next. For example, the Flow S 1300 has slower, looser turns and is great for wild maneuvers on smaller wakes or waves. This medium-aspect wing could be a good option for someone who lives in the ocean or the Great Lakes, where small rolling waves don’t have much power or fully break.

Compare Different Wings: For a fun comparison, try the higher aspect flow wings for more glide at the expense of response. Do a back-to-back with the Flow S 1300 Vs. the Flow 1300. If you’re a dedicated wave rider looking for a prone foil experience, the MN Wave wings are the closest an eFoiler can get to a traditional hydrofoil surf experience.

What should my next Fliteboard wing size be?

Choosing an eFoil Wing Size: The size will be a huge consideration. We recommend sizing down but not too far from your previous wing. If you used an 1800 wing, consider a 1300. If you are riding on a 1300, you should try an 1100. With eFoilers, we often start riders on the 1100 Cruiser regardless, as the J-curve when leaning eFoiling is smaller than other sports. If you have been using an 1100, you can explore smaller sizes in the range you are using or explore wings of different styles in the same size.

Consider the Aspect Ratio:  Size matters, but consider the aspect ratio of the wing you are testing. For example, a large high-aspect wing will have a huge wingspan compared to a medium aspect of the same size. Think more glide but wider arching turns. At the same time, a small HA (High-Aspect) will turn sharp like a medium aspect yet offer better glide efficiency. Think riding unpowered in the wake or the waves. As you become a better eFoiler, consider a smaller wing to tackle steeper waves or simply for the rush of a responsive, maneuverable wing. Testing wings helps you align your purchase with your riding goals, ensuring you invest in the right equipment.

At Emerald Wake, we encourage every rider to test a range of wings before deciding, especially when moving between beginner-friendly wings like the Cruiser range and high-performance options like the Flow, Flyer 800, or Mn Wave wings.

How to Test Different eFoil Wings

When testing wings, you’ll want to assess both stability and performance. Consider how it turns. Is it a wide turn or a tight rolling turn? How long does the wing glide when you cut the power? Can you pump the wing effectively? Are you comfortable and able to adapt to the feel of this wing?

If you took a lesson with us and picked up a Fliteboard, we likely recommended the Cruiser 1100. This is a great all-around wing for those who want stability and sharper turns. It’s your ideal daily driver wing. When testing, focus on how the board behaves at different speeds—how easy is it to take off, and how stable do you feel once you’re flying?

Assess your level: Does it feel too easy? Would a smaller wing be more exciting? Or would too much challenge make eFoiling feel more like work and less like play? If you’re new to eFoiling or sharing the board with friends and family, consider testing a range of sizes from the Cruiser wings. A larger wing might be useful for the uninitiated. Think of slow take-offs, stability, and forgiveness, giving guests more time to find balance and build confidence. On the other hand, advanced riders looking for more speed and control can test smaller wings like the Flyer 800, which adds precision and responsiveness for those who love an adrenaline-filled ride.

How to Test eFoil Wing Responsiveness and Control

When testing wings, it’s crucial to evaluate responsiveness. How does the wing react to your weight shifts, throttle changes, and turns? Testing the Flow S 1300 vs the Flow 1300, for example, will give you a feel for wide, soulful turns, perfect for riding waves. This wing is about flow-hence the name, making it a favorite for riders who enjoy the sense of surfing waves that would be impossible without a hydrofoil. For bigger waves, try the Flow 900 vs the Flow S900. The Flow S 900 will feel looser, like riding a skateboard with loose trucks, while the 900 Flow, being so small, will have a tighter locked-in feel with sharp turns. Both will provide efficient glide, but the Flow 900, having a higher aspect ratio, will have a longer glide if your waves lack power. On that note, you can use power to help in waves so that glide can be less of a consideration than maneuverability.

What’s the best wing for advanced Fliteboard riders?

That depends on the discipline you gravitate towards. If you’re advanced and looking to go faster and ride aggressively, try testing the Fliteboard Flyer 800 vs the Race 700, designed for speed and tight turns. Testing both wings during the same session allows you to feel the contrast in performance and decide which setup best fits your riding style. Whether you prefer cruising or aggressive carving, testing will help you find the right balance.

If you’re an eFoil surfer, like someone using the Fliteboard PRO, you can test all the advanced wave wing options like the Flow Series or the Wave Series. The Flow 900 is incredible for upper-level wave riders who want to charge fast and hard.

For the most advanced riders riding the biggest waves, you want to be on the Ultra L2, the Mn Carbon Wave eFoil system, and the corresponding wings. This is the closest you can get to a traditional hydrofoil surf experience with the benefit of an eFoil.

Why the Right Wing Size Matters for eFoil Performance

Wing size plays a significant role in your eFoiling experience. Larger wings, like the Cruiser 1800, provide more lift and are great for heavy riders, beginners, or riders who want to focus on a stable, laid-back ride. On the other hand, smaller wings like the Flyer 800 or Flow 1100 are more exciting, offering dynamic control for experienced riders pursuing a certain style. Remember, the smaller the wing, the more skill it will take to control.

Testing different sizes will help determine how each wing feels under various water conditions. Is the wing too responsive or too slow for your liking? Does the wing size match the conditions you’ll be riding in? These are essential considerations, and testing is the only way to know for sure.
