Mistake 1: Compromising on Gear Quality
Is cheap eFoil Gear worth it? It can be for the right person but generally no. It ends up costing you in ways that are not always apparent up front.
One of the most common mistakes new eFoilers make is settling for subpar gear to save money. While it’s tempting to cut corners, the hidden costs can add up quickly. Cheaper gear is more prone to breakdowns and often lacks the latest technological advancements, leading to frustration and recurring headaches.
Investing in high-quality, modern equipment from a reputable dealer ensures durability, ease of use, and exponential joy with every session. Newer gear also comes with innovations that make eFoiling safer and more accessible, helping you progress faster. If you’re in the Florida Panhandle, Emerald Wake offers top-tier options and expert advice to set you up for long-term success.
We this this happens from time to time when chatting with riders at our demos. The truth is you can get lucky and if you know what you’re looking for there are some amazing deals out there. We’re not saying you should never consider this option. That said, it can backfire and be more of a headache or the wrong kit for you at the very least. Our take is it’s best to support local dealers and get gear that a trusted shop has inspected. Their reputation is on the line, and they are more likely to back it up than a random seller on Facebook marketplace. We have a full blog you can read here on our thoughts.
Mistake 2: Failing to Think Ahead
Many new riders focus only on their immediate needs, lacking the foresight to plan for future growth. At Emerald Wake, we emphasize choosing gear that challenges you just enough to keep you engaged without creating a steep learning curve. For example, picking the right board and hydrofoil wing can make or break your progression.
Avoid the temptation to choose overly easy setups. Fast rewards might feel great initially, but without the challenge of progression, you’ll plateau quickly. Neurochemically, progress is a key driver of sustained passion. Quick rewards will burn you out while slow progress sets the mind up for fulfillment and motivation. I’ve learned this lesson long ago with my progress as a rider. When it comes to watersports, the initial rewards come fast and it’s so hyper stimulating. Lots of riders have a two-year arc where they go from stoked to board. The key to longevity is consistent progress. This is how I’ve stayed in love with my sprots for 12 years and it’s only gotten stronger.
Strategically choosing gear with room to grow ensures years of excitement, saves money on frequent upgrades, and helps you develop a deeper connection with the sport.
What’s the Best eFoil boards for beginners with room to grow?
The board that is just on the edge of your ability. Here’s why: A key lesson I learned from Hamish is how he loves to direct certain riders to the Fliteboard PRO after a lesson over a Fliteboard. My initial thought was a 100 L board and 1500 wing would be a perfect first set up. His idea was giving riders a small challenge and the lessons to support that journey would make the process more fun albeit slightly more work. That said, it saves riders so much money as they would have to upgrade in 3 months to a year to something more fun to keep the stoke alive. That kind of wisdom resonates as I grow in my watersports journey and hopefully will help you change your frame on this sport and the culture and people behind it.
Mistake 3: Neglecting the Community
eFoiling isn’t just about riding—it’s about the tribe. eFoiling is a small part of a larger connected global watersports ecosystem. The people in this world are some of the most interesting and fun I’ve come across. I’ve come to learn humans are wired for connection. In our increasingly hyper connected world, we’re more disconnected than ever. I see small “Tribe’s” forming everywhere! I find that you are who you surround yourself with and the watersports world is full of people who have ambition mixed with character. Intellectually curious but adventurous. I love the duality and the fact that they ride hard and work hard. This community changed me for the better and I suspect it would do the same for anyone plugged in.
How do I find local eFoil communities near me? Go to events, demos, and test days! You’ll get to learn the latest insider knowledge, try new gear, and connect with the community.
Skipping out on local events, meetups, and networks can leave you isolated and uninspired. At Emerald Wake, we host demos, events, and community gatherings to connect riders in the Florida Panhandle.
Joining the eFoil community taps you into a group of people who value time outdoors in a disconnected, digital world. Watersports enthusiasts often share traits like ambition, intelligence, and a love for balance and flow. Surrounding yourself with these individuals will elevate your experience and provide opportunities for growth beyond the water.
Mistake 4: Avoiding Experimentation and Growth
Another common mistake is sticking to the same gear or routines, leading to stagnation. Humans thrive on growth, and eFoiling is no exception. Testing new gear, like hydrofoil wings or boards, keeps the sport exciting and pushes your skills to new levels. Emerald Wake’s rental program allows you to experiment with the latest innovations, helping you find the perfect setup.
The eFoil industry evolves rapidly, with major design leaps every few years. By trying new gear, you contribute valuable feedback to brands while enriching your own experience. Testing different setups also strengthens your mental flexibility and adaptability, giving you a competitive edge.
Something Hamish and I hear all the time is “How to choose the right hydrofoil wing for my eFoil” It’s a broad question and the answer can be simple or complex depending on the person. New riders are easy as the clear answer is a medium sized mid aspect wing like the Cruiser 1100 from Fliteboard. Intermediate riders should understand their rider archetype and goals so they can test more gear.
